Fifty-eight years after opening its doors, the Whitefish Christian Church was closing for good. The church, which was located on East Second Street, cited shrinking membership and a mix-up over the property’s title as its reasons for closing.

A number of new businesses in Whitefish got started during the week. The Whitefish Athletic Club, Mail Boxes, Etc., Lovely Lilly’s Children’s Consignment Boutique and the Dollar Store all had ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

A new sign ordinance led to a packed City Council chambers. Most of those in attendance were against the ordinance or simply against any sign regulations in general. Most of the regulations referred to flashing signs, which were seen as distracting and not in the town’s character.

A pornography ordinance that was introduced a week before was thrown out by the city before its third reading. The ordinance was intended to control and limit what sorts of lewd materials could be seen and sold in town, but the city decided that was up to citizens to decide.

In response to a community forum that looked into what kind of sex education was needed in Whitefish, a new committee opposed to sex education was also formed. The group, the Whitefish Council for Decency, felt that teaching sex ed would be “disastrous” and that moral would be “cast aside.”
