Whitefish High School received a suggestion for a name change from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA, billed as the “world’s largest animal rights organization,” asked the school to change its name to “Sea Kitten High School” to help protect fish.

Jan. 14, 1999
The proposed playground and sports park on Whitefish’s southeast corner finally got a name — Project Whitefish Kids. The project was already raising funds for the park, which featured baseball and softball fields, soccer fields and a playground.

Jan. 18, 1989
Whitefish was looking into ways to deal with a perceived drug problem, and a “dope detective” seemed like the solution. Police Chief Dave Dolson called Whitefish the “narcotic capital of northwest Montana” and recommended an extra officer that would act as a narcotic detective.
40 years ago
Jan. 18, 1979
A pair of skiers just avoided tragedy on Big Mountain. Two separate skiers needed rescue on the mountain in zero degree weather conditions after deliberately skiing outside of the mountain’s boundaries. Both men were fine outside of some frostbite.

The Whitefish hospital board still hadn’t made a final decision on the new hospital. The board wanted more estimated cost figures before deciding to build the 50-bed hospital, which had a Feb. 15 deadline for a decision. Rising construction and interest costs were creating doubt that the hospital would be able to cover those costs with income.
