Twelve youths from the Glacier Nordic Ski Team traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Feb. 24 for the Intermountain Youth Championships.

The event attracted more than 250 skiers from Montana, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming and is the largest regional racing event for U14 cross-country skiers, with a total of 63 boys competing in the U14 age group races throughout the weekend.

Athletes entered three races starting Saturday with an interval start freestyle or skate race followed by a skier cross event. The skier cross was a downhill race combined with obstacles and jumps raced on skate skis. The event concluded on Sunday, with a mass start classic race of varying distances for all age groups.

The U12 girls turned in solid performances with Maeve Ingelfinger leading the group with a second place finish in the skier cross and top 10 finishes in the other two events.

Jacob Henson led the U14 boys with a fourth and fifth in the skate and classic distance races, respectively. Other top 10 finishes were turned in by Barrett Garcia with a sixth-place and Nate Ingelfinger with a seventh place in the skier cross; Garcia in the classic race earned 10th and Ruedi Steiner finished eighth in the skate race. U16 Winslow Nichols had top five finishes in both his skate and classic races. Henson also earned a third place in the U14 Cup that recognizes the strongest skiers in the age group by awarding points based on finishes at the regional races. Henson proved his strength and consistency by attending five regional events and never finishing outside the top five this season, the team noted in a release.
