Over 100 young skiers from throughout Montana, north Idaho and eastern Washington competed at Whitefish Mountain Resort last weekend in the Base Lodge Clinic ó Sportsman Ski Haus Northern Division Qualifier. Racers ranging in age from 12 to 15 were entered representing clubs from Anaconda, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Helena, Missoula, Red Lodge, Rapid City, SD, Coeur díAlene and Sandpoint, Idaho, Spokane and Newport, Washington, and the Flathead Valley. The three-day race series, held on Hellroaring and Edís Run on Chair 2, included a night slalom race under the lights on Friday night and Giant Slalom races on Edís Run on Saturday and Sunday. Mother Nature provided a difficult test including soft snow conditions, falling snow and extremely poor visibility ó in fact Sundayís competition was reduced to a single run due to deteriorating visibility. Despite the conditions, skiers from the Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation/Whitefish Mountain Resort fared very well on their home hill. The participants competed in both U14 (age 12 and 13) and U16 (age 14 and 15) age divisions. By the conclusion the final awards ceremony Sunday afternoon, FVSEF skiers had claimed an amazing five of six Top Podium spots and 10 of 18 overall podium spots for the four-day event.
