Whitefish wrestlers earn spots on podium in Libby, Eureka

Whitefish wrestlers got plenty of time on the mat this past week.

Last Tuesday they competed at a triangular meet in Libby, where they faced the Loggers and wrestlers from Ronan.

The Bulldogs fell to Libby/Troy 59-13 and to Ronan 58-13.

Nathan Buckley (126) and Dakota Flannery (138) picked up the sole wins for Whitefish against Libby, and Flannery, Camren Ross (170) and Robert Bertelsen (160) picked up the team’s wins over Ronan.

On Saturday wrestlers headed to the Buzz Lucey Invitational in Eureka.

Nathan Sproul (103), Flannery (138) and Jack Eisenbarth (145) all took home gold for the Bulldogs.

Jackson Carson (103) and Dean Kellogg (113) both took fourth, and Bertlesen (160) took third.

Head coach Ryan Boyle said it was one of the best outings he’s seen in his time as head coach.

“They wrestled really well,” he said. “That was the best finals that we’ve ever had since I’ve been here, just being in the finals and finishing out the tournament. To win all three of them was really good.”

Whitefish wrestlers will head to Browning for the Browning Invitational on Thursday before starting winter vacation. That will start at 11 a.m. in Browning.

Boyle said the focus right now is to not slow down after a successful tournament.

“Sometimes they get really excited about doing well in tournaments, and in years past I’ve seen teams back off a little bit after, instead of continuing to grow and work. Hopefully they come in with a little success but still feeling like there’s a lot to work on.”

With a long holiday break coming, Boyle said they won’t be trying to add too much new stuff in the weeks of practices.

“It’s just polishing stuff, it’s not like you need to get a bunch of stuff in there, we’re still working on week one stuff and getting better.”
