The Bulldogs wrestling team got its season underway at the Owen Invitational in Polson on Saturday.

Whitefish finished 15th overall but had some highlight performances.

Nathan Sproul went 2-2 for fourth place at 103, falling to Polson’s Masyn Cowell in the third place match.

Dakota Flannery at 138 also finished fourth.

Jack Eisenbarth and Nathan Buckley also made it to the second day of the tournament but couldn’t place.

Overall, head coach Ryan Boyle said he was happy with what he got out of his team so early on in the season.

“The matches that we lost there on that second day, we were right there with them,” he said. “A couple different things go our way and we’re talking about four placers instead of two.”

Missoula Sentinel, Frenchtown and Polson rounded out the top three overall finishes. Columbia Falls finished just behind at fourth.

The Bulldogs will host their next meet on Friday, the Triangular with Browning and Bigfork. That will start at 6 p.m.

The following day they’ll head to the Superior Invitational before competing in the Libby/Ronan Triangular in Libby on Tuesday.

As far as priorities in practice this week, Boyle said it’s all about getting his less-experienced wrestlers a variety of looks to better prepare them.

“We didn’t defend certain things really well. Part of that is we’re young and they haven’t seen it, and part is it’s the beginning of the year and we haven’t showed it in practice,” he said. “We’re just continuing to do what were doing, getting better at what were focusing on. We’re going to add a couple things here and there, but it;s not rocket science. Just knowing what we do well and sticking to that.”
