Flathead County officials began taking jurisdiction of the “doughnut” area outside Whitefish city limits after a district court judge ruled that Whitefish wouldn’t be “irreparably harmed” without control of the area. County commissioners cited growing discontent by doughnut dwellers over how the city handled their property rights.

The FBI was getting involved in Whitefish business affairs after a local company had $2 million worth of files stolen. Gateway Applications, which created websites for real estate companies, lost the files to a sophisticated computer hacker.

July 13, 1988
A fire at a sawmill on Highway 93 South caused about $200,000 worth of damage and sent a plume of black smoke into the air. Few walls of the mill remained after the fire destroyed the building.

July 13, 1978
Big Mountain Ski Resort shareholders were happy to hear an update from co-founder Ed Schenck that estimated the ski hill’s worth at over $3 million. The resort was going through a $1.25 million expansion program at the time.

The summer fire season got started with a bang, after a storm set off the first wildfire in the Tally Lake Ranger District. The initial fire was only 1/10 of an acre, but hot and dry weather were indications that more fires were to come.
