Lady Dogs drop weekend games to Stevensville, Frenchtown

The Lady Bulldogs kept it close during Friday’s 45-38 loss to Stevensville, but couldn’t hit the big shots when they were needed.

“We battled hard, it was just the fact of not converting a basket when we really needed it. We were so close,” head coach Ben Johnson said.

Marlee Bender had a team-high 11 points for Whitefish, and Lauren Schulz and Annisa Brown both added nine points.

Mikayla Davids scored a game-high 15 points for the Yellowjackets.

The following night Whitefish dropped a conference matchup against Frenchtown 54-14.

The Lady Bulldogs could only muster two points in the first quarter and one point in the second, creating a 26-3 hole at halftime that they couldn’t dig themselves out of.

Bender led the team with five points.

As a down season for Whitefish begins to wrap up, Johnson said he’s proud of the way his team continues to fight and look for ways to improve.

“They really don’t quit,” he said. “They’re going to go at it hard for the rest of it. One of these days hopefully we can come out on top.”

Whitefish heads to Columbia Falls for a rivalry matchup with the Wildkats, who sit comfortably atop Northwest A standings, before heading to Polson on Saturday.

Johnson pointed to the game against the Lady Pirates as an opportunity to pick up a much-needed first win before the divisional tournament in Hamilton.

“That’s a game we can win,” he said.
